Chapter Eight - Erik

It was truly amazing, separate parts and personalities coming together, a dedicated crew steering the ship toward a single destination, everyone doing what they could to make everything work. It had only been two days officially, but the Christmas music festival seemed more like a reality all the time.

Furthermore, it had yet to be graced with a name, “the festival” or “Suspicious Activity Fest” generally used when mentioning it around the office, but spirits were high as well as bright, the fact we were doing it on our own time and not really getting paid for the work put in not mattering a single jot. It was something nice we could do for the community and the city as a whole. Very much in the spirit of the season.

It wasn’t like most of us had much to do anyway, with the politicos flip-flopping on the lock-down issue like so many decked salmon. I was fine to follow the rules, it was just so confusing what the rules actually were.

The technical term was the Novel Corona Virus for good reason. No one had ever seen anything quite like it before. Still, we had our eggnog and our family and friends, and our music, played live for the first time in months.

What else did we really need on a rainy December?

It had been a while since I’d been on the highway, the restrictions keeping most folk well within the city up until recently. Knowing that Susi had been running some open-air festivals I’d seen popping up here and there, I would have gone to one long before what we’d been planning.

Maybe we could have met earlier and started things from there. I wanted to be around her as much as possible, the nearly daily committee meetings allowing me to do just that.

We weren’t always talking, or even interacting, there still a lot of work to do and Susi was the center of it, but just being on the same floor of the same building of her was enough for it to feel like a Christmas miracle.

There had been no meeting that day, Seth deciding to give us a day or two to try and finish what we were working on. Several small tasks still needed doing, an undertaking like that a matter of details rather than a sweeping concept. Component parts came together like a scaffold, building up something wonderful and impressive.

I had a to-do list burning a hole though my smartphone screen, but there was something I’d have to do, or I’d never forgive myself.

The familiar gravel crunched under the tires, kicking up small dust devils on either side of the car. Some of it sticking to the windows in a light sheen, rendering the world slightly askew. My boots once again in the dirt, I approached The Sanctuary recording studio, the hardware on my jacket making gentle music with each step, just hoping he would recognize me in my civvies.

“Erik,” Ari rejoiced, wrapping herself around my leg.

“What’s happening, sweet pea?” I asked, stroking her little blond curls.
